The Angel Lifestyle
No Ultra event would be complete without the Ultra Angels. First formed in 2013, this troupe of dancers have become an indispensable part of every show, helping to hype up the crowds from Miami to Melbourne. As the face of the brand, these girls are selected at auditions which happen around the world, with the lucky few being chosen to perform at the flagship event in Miami. If they manage to impress during that performance, they will be invited to dance at one of Ultra's worldwide shows which take place in a huge number of countries spanning across six continents.
Whilst it might sound like the dream job for many- travelling the world, staying in fancy hotels and having people idolise you- the training that the Angels have to undertake is nothing short of gruelling. To become a part of the family, aside from being able to withstand intensive choreography, an Ultra Angel must prove themselves as a well-rounded performer with multiple talents. Naturally, as they are representing Ultra, these girls must have a good attitude and charming personality, with the ability to keep the crowd's energy levels at a high.
Follow the Angels Down Under
Brittany Marsicek (BMARSZ) is an Angel and YouTuber who vlogs about her Ultra experiences. Watch the videos below as she shares what life is really like for an Angel during her trips to Road to Ultra Australia (2018) and Ultra Australia (2019).
In an interview with Nylon, Katie Kansas- the woman who first thought up the idea of introducing Angels- talks about the family bond that these girls share:
A strong group of performers that support each other is truly something special. It's fantastic and always empowering to work with strong women. When you travel, work, eat, sleep, and socialize together, you become a family. It's magical getting to do what you love while surrounded by one big family. The festival scene has always been about unity, which is what being an Ultra Angel is all about.
2019 Ultra Australia Recap
Ultra first expanded to Australia in 2018 with a Road To Ultra event in Melbourne, which marked the first time that the brand had hosted shows on all six (hospitable) continents in one year. Following on from the raging success and overwhelming response from attendees, Ultra confirmed that they would be returning to the land down under for 2019 and would be adding another show in Sydney.
There were three stages for the first ever full-scale Ultra Australia: UMF Radio, Resistance and the Ultra Main Stage. Performing on said stages was a stellar lineup consisting of heavyweights like Marshmello, Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers, Illenium and Slushii, with numerous Australian acts flying the flag for homegrown talent.
Marshmello wowed the audience as he dropped endless beats before a dazzling light display, playing an incredible selection of his most popular tracks mingled in with some heavy bass. Martin Garrix had the benefit of playing as the sun set, meaning spirits and hands were equally high as his massive hit Animals boomed out into the crowd. Finally, The Chainsmokers closed down both days, bringing the festival to an end in style as a barrage of pyrotechnics illuminated the faces of thousands.
